FSSAI stands for food safety and standard authority of India which is a legitimized autonomous institution under the ministry of health and family welfare and governed by food safety and standard ACT - 2006 with an objective to regulate, register, govern, and issue FSSAI registration to food business operators in India.

What is FSSAI Registration?

 

FSSAI registration is a 14-digit uniform numbering license and registration issued by FSSAI as per the FSS act 2006 to all food business operators, this registration number is required to be printed on all the food products as it provides.

 

Getting an FSSAI registration online is an imperative duty for all food business operators ( FBO ) as per sections 31(1) & 31(2) of FSS ACT, 2006 to commerce in food business legally in India.

 

 


 

 

 

What is FoSCoS-FSSAI?

 

The food safety compliance system FosCoS is an online portal launched in 2020 by FSSAI for ease of providing licensing and registration to FBOs it’s an enhanced version of the (FLRS) Food licensing and registration system.

OBJECTIVE OF FosCos FSSAI

  1. Enables the application to seed business-specific details such as CIN No, PAN No. and GST No. to ensure 360-degree profiling and validation of FBOs
  2. Enhance user performance of the application and make the application process simpler and efficient to promote ease of doing business amongst FBOs
  3. Achieve minimal physical documentation and streamline business process flows for FBOs for online applications

 

 

 


 

 

 

Classification of FSSAI registration/license and Eligibility in India

 

 

FSSAI licensing and registration are classified into three categories as per nature and size of the food business operators.

Food business operators (FBOs) with an annual turnover of less than 12 LPA ( Lakh per annum ) are expected to have a Basic FSSAI registration through form - A.

Such as Petty retailers, ice-cream sellers, street hawkers, and individuals manufacturing and selling food by themselves.

NOTE: For marketers and manufacturers, it’s important to have a state license or central license as per the nature of their FBOs irrespective of their annual turnover.

  • Authorized person address proof such as Aadhar card, driving license, PAN card
  • Passport size photo
  • Business name and address
  • Form IX nomination of a person as per FSS rules
  • Details of directors/ proprietors and executive members
  • PAN and bank details
  • Nature of business details
  • NOC from the municipality or panchayat
  • Proof of the premise ownership or rental agreement

Renewal Of FSSAI Registration

 

FSSAI registration renewal is as important as getting a new registration. The license is issued for the validity of 1-5 years. Hence all the food business operators must file for FSSAI renewal 90 days before the due date.

FBOs who fail to renew their FSSAI registration shall be deemed unfit to commence any business as per guidelines.

FSSAI Non-Compliance Penalties In India

 

 

Selling substandard food:

Any person selling, storing, manufacturing any food article which is not as per the standards of FSS regulations shall be liable to a penalty of 5 lakh rupees.

Misbranding:

Any person or FBO selling any food article through misbranding and false advertisement shall be liable to a penalty of 10 lakh rupees.

Unhygienic conditions:

Any person or FBO manufacturing, or processing any food article in unhygienic conditions shall be liable to a penalty of 1 lakh rupees.

Possessing adulterant:

Any person who commerces unsafe food articles which may harm the health of consumers such as FBOs is liable to a penalty of 10 lakh rupees and in case of death of a consumer, Life imprisonment shall be liable.
